Your Space: Search for Similarities in workplace

Jun 24, 2010

Biman Das of etc Channel Punjabi shares an interesting article on the development of effective working relationships with diverse peers at work.

Want to develop effective working relationships with diverse people at work? Better start with similarities, not differences, among people and build relationships. By starting to acknowledge the similarities and likenesses, we create a starting point for understanding and appreciating diversity in the work place. Diversity is known to add not only a special and unique richness, but also special challenges. As a media professional, manager, supervisor, coworker, staff member or business owner, effective diverse work relationships shall always prove pivotal for our success.

The Interpersonal Level

Take a look at our coworkers or reporting staff with new eyes. Think about the factors that we share in common with them. We'll find:

• We're all human beings with complex emotions, needs, interests, outlooks, viewpoints and dreams. Share something about our self to create an environment in which our coworker wants to share information with us. Listen and don't pry. Polite and continuing interest in our coworkers contributes to workplace harmony

• We have family and other interests outside of work. Hear what your coworkers have to tell about their personal lives. Remember to demonstrate respect and interest

Work is more exciting when we feel as if we are accomplishing mutual goals. Act as if we are part of a winning team. Emphasize with coworkers for our common interest in our success and the success of the organization. We'll get to recognize people as assets if we participate in any fun or team building events our organization sponsors. If we start by recognizing the ways in which we are similar to our coworkers, we'll apparently build a base of understanding and acceptance that will withstand the sometimes stormy times when our differences come to the forefront.
