Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi has applauded Rajya Sabha MP and Essel Group Chairman, Dr Subhash Chandra's gesture of donating his entire salary as a Parliamentarian to the PM's National Relief Fund, calling it 'praiseworthy' and hoping that it would inspire others.
Dr. Chandra had on March 24 announced that he would only accept a token Re 1 a month towards his salary as an independent member of the Rajya Sabha from Haryana, and would contribute the rest of his paycheck to the PM's Relief Fund. He had personally handed over a cheque for the amount to the Prime Minister the same day.
In a letter to Dr. Chandra on Monday, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the move, saying, "Service and sacrifice have always held a place of honour in our nation. In our culture, a life dedicated to the service of others is considered well-spent."
Quoting Swami Vivekananda's exhortation to encourage the sentiments of "service and sacrifice among people", PM Modi said that Dr. Chandra's move of giving up his salary was an expression of the early-20th century spiritual leader's ideas about service towards the people. "I hope that this step of yours will become a source of inspiration for others," he added.
