Zee Africa Launches FTA Channel 'Zee One'

Nov 24, 2021
After the successful launch of Zee TV in Africa in 1996, the Zee brand has continued to expand in the continent. Since then, the launch of Zee World, the flagship CAT 2 channel, as well as Zee Magic in 2015, and Zee Alem in 2020, have seen a tremendous response. The African region has shown a strong affinity for Bollywood and Indian content and in response to the diverse preferences of the viewers, Zee One was launched on the 1st of November 2021.

“We are incredibly pleased to offer Zee One as a destination of family-friendly entertainment, a place where viewers can easily connect with our carefully selected programming. Zee TV was our first channel to launch in Africa in 1996 and it's inspiring to see that it is still expanding its reach 25 years later.'' said Ashok Namboodiri Chief Business Officer – International Business.

A 24-hour General Entertainment channel, Zee One will showcase global favourites and was launched on Openview, a free-to-air platform in South Africa with more than 2.5 million subscribers and growing.   Punit Misra, President – Content and International Markets said “We've been present in the pay market for so many years and this is our first foray in the FTA market which significantly increases our footprint within Africa. I am confident we will see our viewership expanding exponentially and reaching those homes which we weren't able to earlier.”

Zee One also launched on StarTimes, a first for a channel in Africa, on 1st November. StarTimes is a leading digital TV operator in Africa, serving 13 million DVB subscribers and 27 million OTT users in 30+ countries. The brand is positioned as an entertainment destination which reflects the hopes, aspirations as well as the trials and tribulations of the viewers. “The corporate positioning of Extraordinary Together – with a vision to provide a unified brand experience and to delight consumers across the world by creating extraordinary entertainment and experiences that inspire to transcend the ordinary and become extraordinary.” said Somnath Malakar, CEO, Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.
