Zee Africa supports 14th annual Gandhi Salt March

Apr 25, 2018

The five-kilometre march, now in its fourteenth year, aimed to promote non-violence and social cohesion within the South African context, while also honouring Mahatma Gandhi's Salt Walk which took place in 1930 in India

Zee Africa partnered with Ela Gandhi, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi of the Gandhi Development Trust for the momentous annual Salt March held on 22 April 2018 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa.

The five-kilometre march, now in its fourteenth year, aimed to promote non-violence and social cohesion within the South African context while also honouring Mahatma Gandhi's Salt Walk which took place in 1930 in India.

The march also honoured South African President, Nelson Mandela and anti-apartheid activist Albertina Sisulu for their lifelong commitment towards non-violence and nation building.  Furthermore, the day paid tribute to the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

The Salt March started at the Amphitheatre on the Beach in Durban, leading to the well-known Ushaka Marine World and back – covering the symbolic five-kilometre distance.

Harish Goyal, CEO, Zee TV Africa says, “It was a privilege to be part of the Salt March that visually honours - through the five-kilometre walk - the incredible impact of Mahatma Gandhi on both Indian and South African societies.”
